An 11 year-old boy died suddenly after suffering a suspected allergic reaction to the smell of fish being cooked by his grandma.

Jean-Pierre’s family told police they were cooking fish when the incident occurred and his grandmother acknowledged that he suffered an apparent allergic reaction, New York Daily News reported.

An urgent care doctor said that inhaling specific fumes can trigger deadly allergic reactions in children, but she was unable to comment on the exact details of Jean-Pierre’s case.

Police have not yet confirmed the boy’s cause of death and have not specified what type of fish was cooking when the reaction occurred. Authorities do not suspect any criminality at this point, with no detail offered on whether Camron’s allergies were known before his tragic death.

Fish is one of the eight major food allergies in the US and can be deadly to those allergic.
