5-yearold girl hospitalised, undergoes surgery after being raped by man, 28

A 5-year-old girl had to undergo emergency surgery after she was raped by a sick paedophile.

Steven Sarandon Barnes, 28, raped the child last Thursday in an attack that a police chief described as one of the “worst cases that he’s seen in his 31 years in law enforcement.”

The child had to be taken to the emergency room of Prattville Baptist Hospital in Alabama after the alleged attack last Thursday. She was later transported to the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham for surgery. She remains in hospital, where she is said to be in a stable condition.

Reacting to the rape, prosecutor Randall Houston told the Montgomery Advertiser: “Anybody who would do this to a child is a complete and total danger to the society and does not need to be roaming about the community where children are at large.

“This is one sick bastard who I hope never sees the light of day. We’ll do everything we can to make that happen.”

Barnes has since been arrested and charged with first-degree rape, chemical endangerment of a child, as well as second-degree possession of marijuana.

Chief Johnson said he’d arrested Barnes at a home in Deatsville Highway in Millbrook, where the sex attack is said to have occurred. Johnson added that his department was working closely with prosecutors and social services to build the strongest case possible against Barnes.

He told Al.com: “Under no circumstances should a child ever be exposed to anything like this victim was.”

Millbrook Police Chief PK Johnson also told of his horror at the attack, saying: “I will say that this is one of the worst cases that I’ve seen in my 31 years in law enforcement.”

Barnes has been held on $106,000 bond ahead of his first court appearance.
