Thieves steal car with baby inside then run mum over as they flee, but she miraculously survives

Two thieves stole an Audi with a four-week-old baby inside and ran the child’s mum over as they fled, and they have still not been caught.

The carjackers drove off with the baby girl from a home in Acocks Green, Birmingham, running over her mum with her own car as they fled. Claire O’Neill was left with injuries to her arm.

She had pulled up on her driveway on Marie Drive on July 20 with baby Eliza in the back seat when she was immediately approached by two men. The mother tried to get her baby out of the back of the car but was unsuccessful. She then pleaded with the attackers to get her baby out, but the men ran her over instead. She was left with injuries to both her legs and face.

Witnesses say they heard terrified Claire screaming “My baby, my baby” as the masked criminals then fled with her child.

Officers across the city immediately pulled together in a desperate search for her daughter and 45 minutes later an ambulance crew found the baby where she had been dumped – still inside her car seat – at Small Heath Health Centre in Chapman Road. She was safe and well.

West Midlands Police today confirmed that they have not yet made any arrests in relation to the carjacking.
