Woman calls out Nigerian men who support oppression of gay men by authorities but are crying out now that officers are harrassing men with dreads and tattoos

A female Twitter user has called out Nigerian men who support the criminalization of gay men because “it is against our culture” yet are crying out now that the police are arresting men with tattoos and dreadlocks because it is “strange to our culture.”

Twitter users were incensed after BBC quoted the Nigerian police as saying that they are profiling and going after certain men because “tattoo and dreadlock dey strange for our culture.”

Twitter users complained that the Nigerian police were already mixing religion and culture with what is constitutionally allowed. 

But a female Twitter user pointed out the hypocrisy by reminding them that a number of Nigerian men support the authorities whenever they arrest gay men because their way of life is supposedly not supported by our culture and religion, yet are complaining now that they are being arrested because their way of life is frowned upon by “our culture”.

@ayabalaafin tweeted: “So Nigerian men suddenly understand that tattoos and piercings and dreadlocks are not wrong, even if they are not allowed in the Bible. ….and yet, when these same police officers arrest “gay” men, you support it and use your holy book to justify your support of cruelty.”
